History of The Fernbank Museum

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History goes back to the 1800s when Emily Harrison noticed Atlanta’s woodlands shrinking due to city growth. She decided to preserve 65 acres of the forest and named it ‘Fernbank’ because of the fern-covered creek bank, one of her favorite spots.

In 1939, local naturalists founded the Fernbank Museum Association, initially focusing on local plants and animals. Then, in 1992, the museum moved to its current location, a building designed with a massive dinosaur skeleton at the Grand Hall. This move transformed the museum into a world-class institution exploring Earth’s ancient history.
